Key West African Cemetery at Higgs Beach

This monument marks one of the earliest examples of Key West's One Human Family philosophy. Three illegal slave ships were diverted to Key West by the US Navy. The community  worked collectively to provide food and shelter for the Africans. Despite their efforts, hundreds died.  A memorial at the beach commemorates the burial ground of these Africans while the historical and archeological details are on exhibit at MFMM.
